Is your Agile ...Fragile, ...Robust, ...or Antifragile?

Presented by: Brian Hemker

In today’s ultra-competitive and high-tech business environment, many established organizations realize they have problems adapting to the pace of their ever evolving competition. In preparation (or desperation) many have been enticed by the promise of “Going Agile” to improve the speed and productivity of their IT development organization.

Some apply an “Agile Methodology” and enjoy initial success only to find out that the practices expose problems, but do not solve them. So they apply judgement that served them in the past, the same thinking that was used to create their earlier situation, in an attempt to resolve their dilemmas. Low and behold, the FRAGILE edifice crumbles and becomes even less effective than the old systems.

Others adopt “Enterprise Agile”. They are organized and methodical, buying powerful tools, investing time and treasure in training, and hiring costly experts to build a ROBUST Agile organization. This path seems safe albeit expensive, and frequently is - if well implemented; but occasionally, the safety is a precarious and pricey illusion that can fail dramatically.

And then, there are the organizations that embrace a culture and philosophy that lives to experiment and adapt in a way that exceeds the commonly accepted notion of going Agile. For them, failure is not only an option, but a tool to get better at what they do. They do not avoid obstacles, they confront them. They do not manage risks; they take advantage of them. They are not only Agile, but are ANTIFRAGILE.

Learning Objectives:
  • Exposure to Nassim Taleb’s innovative concept of Antifragility.
  • Challenge common “Best Practices” that increase the chance of catastrophic failure.
  • Identify opportunities to apply Agile values and principles to become more Antifragile.
