Presented by: Michelle Angelo, Doralisa Eatherton

Have you ever heard a customer say things like:

  • “we basically know the type of product we want to buy” or
  • “we pretty much know our process and what we need to improve” or
  • “the vendors know what they’re doing and they have software to solve all our problems”

…so why not just buy the thing—what does business analysis do for us anyways?”

What level of risk from unfinished or limited business analysis are we willing to accept? Do we want to buy a really nice fork only to find out we want to eat soup?

We will discuss the consequences of “just buying the thing” at Great River Energy and how the organization made the decision to pull the plug on a million dollar project.

Learning Objectives:

  • Balance between breadth and depth of current and future state process in a COTS environment
  • Using business analysis as a risk mitigation strategy to avoid failure
  • Anticipating and dealing with unintended consequences of change
