Understanding the Structure of Your Business Decisions Will Get You High-Quality Business Rules

ABOUT THIS SESSION:

This session discusses a unique comparison where both a specialist in rule writing and rule based systems wrote rules for a particular decision and a novice business expert with a short training in RuleSpeak® wrote rules for the same domain. An analysis of the results and the differences gives insight in some general quality measures for business rules analysis. These results will be presented as:

• an instrument to measure the structural complexity of a rule set
• a technique to visualize the decision structure of a ruleset
• guidance for novice rule analysts to create a balanced decision structure



ABOUT THE SPEAKER(s):

Drs. Silvie Spreeuwenberg is the co-founder and director of LibRT. Having a background in artificial intelligence, her focus is to make sophisticated techniques and knowledge available for a wider audience.
 
Her interests include how domain experts can best be involved in developing and maintaining rule based systems. This interest has led to the development of methodologies and supporting technology to verify and validate business rules on logical consistency, completeness, duplication and correctness. A related aspect is to find a balance between precise and readable specifications for business people as a member of OMG's business rules working group resulting in the SBVR standard. Being a native Dutch speaker this material has been made available for the Dutch market in a Dutch version of RuleSpeak.
 
Her experiences with many clients and focus on rule quality are reflected in her regular columns for the Business Rules Journal.
